Red-throated Loon with baby

Gavia stellata. Red-throated Loons are the smallest of the world's loons. They feed on fish, aquatic insects and plant material. This adult is still in breeding plumage; the baby is nearly full grown. This image was taken at the end of August, near Deadhorse, Alaska. The parents were frantically feeding this chick in attempt to get it large enough to fly before freezeup.
