Gavia immer. Found throughout Alaska, Common Loons are relatively large (wingspan up to 46 inches; weight up to 9 pounds) fish-eating birds that dive to capture prey. Sub-adult Loons generally live at sea. Adult loons nest on banks of fresh water ponds and small lakes.
