Gyrfalcon
Falco rusticolus. The largest of the worlds falcons, Gyrfalcons live only in arctic regions, mostly north of 60 degrees latitude. They hunt in open areas, away from boreal forrests, and nest in tall cliffs or on open tundra. They feed on ptarmigan, hares, ground squirrels and other small mammals. We photographed this bird south of Polychrome pass in Denali National Park.
