MMMMM YUMMY SHOOTS

Enjoying delicious meal of dessicated marsh foliage, this fat little Muskrat (Ondatra zibethicus) was totally oblivious to our presence. We photographed him on a frozen lakeshore near the Arctic Circle in the Kanuti National Wildlife Refuge; his luxurious fur kept him comfortable despite the -12F temperature. In cold climates muskrats will eat as much as a third of their weight in food a day to maintain body temperature.
