Marmota caligata.
One of three species of marmots found in Alaska,
the hoary marmot has a white patch above its nose and usually has dark brown feet. Marmots feed on grasses, roots, berries and flowering plants.
They hibernate in tunnels that they plug to protect themselves from low temperatures. They summer in rocky areas where they can hide from predators.
