Sock her, mom
A female Northern Fur Seal discusses her newborn with one of her harem mates. Female fur seals typically weigh between 75 and 120 pounds, less than one fifth the weight of an adult male. After giving birth, the new mother nurses her pup and then goes out to sea to replenish her fat reserves, staying away from 2 to 7 days, depending on how far she must go for food. Pups born in places close to good forage, such as Bogoslof Island, get fed every 2 to 3 days, whereas pups born in the Pribilofs frequently go more than a week between feedings.
